Advisory Group on Drugs in Traffic

 

Objective of the Project

The objective of this project is to provide an overview of the prevalence of driving under the influence of drugs in member countries and practice to combat it. It takes into account the development of the EC DRUID (1) project and focus on collecting information that is complementary of the information collected in the framework of this project. A strong focus on the project is on non EU countries.
(1) DRUID (Driving under the Influence of Drugs, Alcohol and Medicines) is a major EC Project which aims at providing scientific support to the EU transport policy to reach the 2010 road safety target by establishing guidelines and measures to combat impaired driving.

Participating Countries

The Advisory Group is chaired by Mr. Horst SCHULZE (BASt, Germany).
The following countries have nominated an expert to the advisory group: Australia, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the United States.

Working Method

A consultant has been mandated to draft the main report, which will be commented and reviewed by the Advisory Group. The report will focus on:

  • The prevalence of driving under the influence of drugs in OECD countries;
  • The impact of various drugs on driving behaviour and accident risks;
  • Legislation and detection practices;
  • The strategies to combat drug use in traffic.

Calendar

A first draft report will be submitted to the Advisory Group for comments by the end of 2008. A final report is expected in 2009.
